We know better than anyone, there is no reason to be ashamed of a bare head! And now Mattel is finally introducing the world to a bald Barbie. The doll, who will be one of Barbie's friends, is designed to help eradicate the stigma that surrounds baldness, especially baldness in child cancer patients. Unfortunately for us, Mattel has decided against retailing the bald doll in their stores. Instead Mattel stated on their Facebook page:
"Through a thoughtful approach, we made the decision not to sell these dolls at retail stores, but rather get the dolls directly into the hands of children who can most benefit from the unique play experience, demonstrating Mattel’s ongoing commitment to encourage play as a respite for children in the hospital and to bring joy to children who need it most."
Of course the doll will come complete with accessories consisting of hats, scarves, and even wigs. The bald Barbie came about from a simple Facebook group, "Beautiful and Bald Barbie. Lets see if we can get it made!" Founded by two mothers, Jane Bingham and Rebecca Sypin, both dealing with chemotherapy treatments and subsequent hair loss.
What do you think of Mattel's bold decision? We give them a two very enthusiastic thumbs up and can't wait to see what kind of hats she'll be rocking.
